90000 Top 10 Winter Flies for Western North Carolina and East Tennessee 90001 90002 Written by: Brown Hobson, Brown Trout Fly Fishing 90003 90004 90005 This winter rainbow came from the Wautauga River. 90005 90007 Photo courtesy Brown Hobson 90008 90002 Winter fishing in the Southeast is not what it is in the rest of the country. We are blessed with average lows in the high 20s and average highs in the upper 40s. That still puts average water temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s, unless you are close enough to a dam to enjoy temps in the upper 40s.Those temperatures are warm enough to allow enjoyable fishing all winter, but do put trout in feeding modes that are different from those of spring, summer, fall. I fish all over Western North Carolina and East Tennessee, and these are flies that I have found work all over during the winter months on both freestones and tailwaters. 90003 90002 90012 90007 [Click the name of each fly to be taken to a place to buy, a recipe, or a video.] 90008 90015 90003 90017 90002 90012 1. Squirmy Worm a.k.a. The Worm 90015 90005 This worm pattern has significantly more action than its little cousin, the San Juan Worm. In the winter, I fish this fly pretty large, like a size 8 or 10. We get more rain during the winter, so terrestrial worms are washed into the river systems and because of its size, fish often will move to it even when they are not actively searching for food. 90003 90023 90002 90012 2. The Brain — a.k.a. Micro Spawn 90015 90005 This fly is a monster, size 12, at least in terms of egg patterns used for trout. We find that fish eat this fly more because of its shock value than because it simulates fish roe. As with many of the large flies on this list, winter fish are not feeding as actively as they do when water temps are warmer, but this big meal is one that they often can not pass on. 90003 90029 90002 90012 3. Girdle Bug 90015 90003 90002 Most of our streams have stonefly populations, and trout seem to be looking for these big meals periodically throughout the year. Even our tailwaters have big stones, and it seems like the fish only need to see a few before keying in on them. This is also a great big fly that will get fish moving during cold weather. 90003 90036 90002 90012 4. Rainbow Warrior 90015 90003 90002 Lance Egan really hit a homerun when he designed this fly. It is super effective on almost every stream I fish, and I prefer sizes 16-22 during the winter. We do not have nearly as many bugs crawling around during the winter, but the few that do are usually in the smaller sizes. The flashy nature of this bug seems to really attract fish well when standard looking flies are not.90003 90043 90002 90012 5. Pheasant Tail 90015 90003 90002 This fly is pretty standard and does not need more publicity, but it is so effective that I could not leave it off. I have an entire box dedicated to variations of this fly in sizes 8-24. I find that during the winter this fly-with a copper bead in sizes 18-24-is a go-to pattern every day. 90003 90050 90002 90012 6. Walt’s Worm 90015 90003 90002 I’ve seen a lot of tutorials going around the Internet about how to tie this fly and its cousin, the sexy Walt’s worm.Caddisfly larvae in the South this time of year are only two or three months away from hatching and are usually becoming quite large. I have caught fish on this fly in the really large sizes, such as 8 and 10, as well as in sizes 14 and 16. I usually put a bright, colored bead or bright dubbing behind a metallic bead for this fly during the winter. 90003 90057 90002 90012 7. Soft Hackle Surveyor 90015 90003 90002 This fly works great in deep, slow pools where trout are resting. The dubbing color has just enough flash to get fish’s attention, and the big, billowy partridge feathers are tantalizing in the slower moving water.I mostly have this fly in sizes 10 and 12. 90003 90064 90002 90012 8. Brown’s UV Soft Hackle 90015 90003 90002 This is a fly I was hesitant to put my name on because it is so simple and many guides fish flies just like it. I felt it needed a name to be on a list, so there it is. I fish this in size 18 during the winter. I will fish a 16 at times during the rest of the year, but during the winter it’s always 18 because that’s the right size to match the bugs present in cold weather. The UV dubbing seems to really trigger strikes and while I’ve tried many bead colors, copper is the best.I either fish this fly behind a larger bug or as a dropper off a dry fly. 90003 90071 90002 90012 9. Zebra Midge 90015 90003 90002 The Zebra midge and the many variations are probably already in your box. Midges are the bugs I see hatch most during the winter, and like the Pheasant Tail and UV Soft Hackle, I always try at least a couple of these behind a worm or stonefly. They are also small enough that you can fish them below a small parachute or even a Comparadun if you see fish midging in slow water.90003 90078 90002 90012 10. Puff Daddy 90015 90003 90002 This is one you may not have heard of unless you are on the Watauga or South Holston Tailwaters. The Puff Daddy was created by Blake Boyd for the super-picky fish in the slow flat water. It is small and sparse and takes a good helping of Frog’s Fanny to keep it afloat, but is very effective. I mostly fish dark colors, such as black and olive, during the winter and match the CDC to the thread body. I use it in sizes 18-22. 90003 90002 90007 Brown Hobson is owner and head guide for Brown Trout Fly Fishing, in Asheville, North Carolina. He’s also a former Trout Bum of the Week. 90008 90003 .90000 13 Winter Fly Fishing Destinations 90001 90002 Need a break from skiing and common winter activities? Take a breather with a winter fly fishing trip. 90003 90002 90005 90003 90002 90008 Many people stop casting when the flakes start flying and turn their attention to winter-oriented sports. 90009 Truth is, fish do not leave in the winter. Although catching them can be a little trickier and your fingers are bound to get cold, the winter months are often a great time to enjoy rivers that are over-fished and crowded in the warmer months.90003 90002 We picked out some of our favorite winter fishing destinations with the help of Cloud9 Living that offer prime fishing even in the dead of winter. So ditch the skis for a weekend and grab that fly rod. 90003 90013 Park City, UT 90014 90002 The Provo and Weber rivers are known as prime summer fishing spots, but when the crowds take to the ski hills, it leaves these rivers virtually empty of people but still teaming with fish. Already planning a trip out to Park City for some skiing? Hook up with a guide service for the afternoon and exchange skis for a rod and reel.90003 90013 Oregon Coast 90014 90002 90020 90003 90002 For a dose of heart-stopping steelhead fishing, the Oregon Coast is the place to be in the winter. The Lower Rogue River is home to Oregon’s premier coastal steelhead fishery. With as many as twenty to thirty thousand fish moving through the river during December and January, you’ll get first shot at the «fish of 1,000 casts» heading to the upper tributaries. A few other good coastal steelhead rivers include the Alsea, the Chetco, the Umpqua, and Siletz Rivers.90003 90013 Washington, Cascade Range 90014 90002 The Skagit and Sauk Rivers flow to the coast from the Cascades. Steelhead are the main attraction here again. Fall brings in sea-run cutthroat but the winter is the perfect time to score big with native and hatchery steelhead. And, it’s an easy two-hour drive from Seattle. 90003 90013 Pittsburgh, PA 90014 90002 Believe it or not, the Youghiogheny River, just an hour south of Pittsburgh, has fantastic year-round fishing. Cold water from the Youghiogheny Reservoir Dam, located near the town of Confluence, helps support a good population of brook, brown, and rainbow trout, year around.Hook up with a good guide service, as this river can be tricky to fish. 90003 90013 Michigan 90014 90034 Michigan steelhead; photo by Aaron 90002 Steelhead fishing in tributaries of the Great Lakes can be epic in the winter, and for many anglers, Michigan represents the pinnacle of steelhead fishing. Even in the frigid water of winter, Steelhead strike voraciously, make bullish runs, and leap like tarpon. The Muskegon, Manistee, and Pere Marquette rivers are some of the best known, but there are dozens of good fisheries across Michigan, the Upper Peninsula (and Northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, too).90003 90013 Missoula, MT 90014 90002 In the Bitterroot Range, the Bitterroot River is home to great winter fishing. The key is to think warmth. The warmer the water, the more likely fish will strike your nymph. Fish spots of the river that get as much sunlight as possible. Tailwaters directly below dams are another great spot to find fish. The water stays relatively warm, concentrating fish. 90003 90013 San Antonio, TX 90014 90002 Looking to escape the cold? San Antonio is home to a number of lakes and reservoirs that have been abundantly stocked with largemouth bass, striped bass, and catfish.Improve your changes by hiring a guide service that will gain you access to the area’s private lakes. 90003 90013 Anchorage, AK 90014 90002 The rivers of the Kenai Peninsula are home to some of the best rainbow trout fishing in the world. Combined with the rugged beauty that only Alaska can deliver, the Kenai and Chugach backcountry is a one stop shop for winter fishing so long as you can handle short hours of daylight and cold fingers. With Alyeska right down the road, this is another great destination to commingle fishing and incredible skiing.90003 90013 Key West, FL 90014 90051 Bonefish on a fly; photo by Nils Rinaldi 90002 Bonefish are among the best saltwater fighters and a prized target for anglers tossing a fly. Lightening fast, the bonefish hang in shallow waters around the Keys and Everglades. If you’re looking to step away from the stream and try something different, bonefishing is a thrill you will not soon forget. 90003 90013 British Columbia 90014 90002 British Columbia’s lower mainland is home to some of the province’s finest winter-run steelhead fishing.90003 90002 Within two hours of Vancouver, there are a multitude of Fraser River tributaries, such as the Vedder River, that see healthy returns of steelhead every winter. The run starts in early January and can last until late May, bringing in monstrous steelhead from the Pacific. 90003 90002 Plus, the scenery is mind blowing! 90003 90013 Mountain Home, AR 90014 90002 In the Ozarks, the White River is home to great bass and trout fishing. Drift boat fly fishing has taken off on the river and opened up a return to the original style of quiet drift fishing on the White. The river is stocked year-round and great fishing can be found near Bull Shoals and the Norfork Tailwaters. 90003 90013 Colorado 90014 90068 The Blue River in Colorado; photo by Dr.DeNo 90002 Alpine streams that are flush with fish in the summer months retain their stock during the colder season.
